Hello everyone!

Today, I’d like to answer some questions from the readers of this blog.

-------------------------------------------

azkic asked: There are a couple of things that I’ve been wondering how I should explain to my 5 years old son. One is the fact that when the runner slides towards the fielder that is in the second base – not towards the second base itself. The other one is the reason why the hitters would intend to hit the ball by letting the bat fly in the air. I haven’t been able to answer him every time he asks for the reason. I’m just wondering what I should tell him what the reasons are when he asks those questions at the ballpark.

As you may already know, a double play, for example, is when a shortstop is at second base and trying to get the out at second base then throw it to first. The rule book allows one to slide to the direction of the fielder as long as he can reach the base with either his leg or hand. This is to distract the fielder and hopefully keep his team at the plate for one more out. This is not intended to cause any injury - professional players on both sides, the runner and the fielder, know how to act under these conditions.

Answering second part of the question - when the hitter is fooled by the pitch when he thinks it’s a fast ball and it happens to be a ball that is blown away often. When the batter cannot reach the ball by holding on to the bat in the last moment then he’d throw the bat to try to make contact with the ball. This is not by design - let’s say it’s an emergency act when the hitter is fooled by a pitch.

suzuki asked: Of all the managers in NPB, who do you think is the exceptional one in terms of “strategy” and “commandability”? Which manager is the one that makes you think - “Hmm, that’s a clever move!”? Each and every manager has different kind of background and characteristics as well as the team. It would be greatly appreciated if you could tell us which manager is the one that you’d consider as a strong rival. If this is something that you’d find quite difficult to answer then the answer can be as vague as “This manager’s strategy is interesting” or “I’m curious about this manager’s strategy”.

I think that every team has a very good manager. For example, the managers in the Pacific League, Oh-kantoku, Nomura-kantoku, Ito-kantoku, and two gaijin (foreign) managers, Hilman-kantoku and Collins-kantoku, are all really good - they are all prepared. They all have their strengths and weaknesses but I’d place Oh-san on the top of the list authentically – he really does a great job of creating runs for his team. Ito-kantoku has the same strength as well. Nomura-kantoku uses a lot of strategies and he uses them very effectively. I think that the managers in Japan are as good as any managers in the world.

SexyLeeAnn asked: Hi Bobby,

I am a great fan of Kurara Chibana (though I'm only 2 years younger than her), and would like to know more about what you have felt and seen of her when you met her at Beyonce's party.

I didn't watch Miss Universe 2006 last year, and when Miss Japan 2007 won this year, I did a check on the previous Miss Japans by watching some Youtube videos, and realized that Kurara-san is really in a league of her own.

I mean she's definitely one of the most interesting, alluring, appealing Japanese ladies I have ever seen on global platforms. Just wondering if you also have any other photos of her as well?

Anyways, you are really lucky to have met her. Hope you can reply to my questions soon.

Thanx so much, Bobby.

Yours truly,
SexyLeeAnn

I agree totally with the writer that she is a special person. She has a gift of beauty, intelligence and charm. I think she’ll be one of the big successes in the future in whatever she does.

Angel asked: I read some articles about you in the newspaper. The articles mentioned that you will accept the offer in the Major League if there is one... Is it true?

The newspaper has totally misrepresented the truth as I have never said that nor thought that. I have already been asked by MLB teams to return to the States and I have not accepted their offers. I’d like to make this clear as I’d like to set the record straight.

I’m just amazed how you and the team is still keeping up with the wins even though a lot of core players are injured and not playing right now. This might be a crucial test for the Marines but we believe that you will be able to get through it – we’ll be able to celebrate together in this fall. Please keep up the great work.

    I have a question:
I saw your post which you talked about the coaches of the team – it was really interesting read. (We don’t get to see such an article about coaches anywhere else.)

There are really great coaches in the Marines, can you please tell us more about each one of the coaches (their responsibility) in detail? From an amateur point of view, it seems to me that Takasawa-coach has too much responsibility after Robson hitting coach retired. Same thing goes to Sonokawa-coach in Nigun. My question is: Does the team always need certain number of coaches to have the ability to operate well? Or does the team rather have one really good coach for each position? Please educate us on this.)

    (Bobby, Konnichiwa.

Thank you for answering my questions.
With your answers, I was able to understand the reason behind certain situations such as sliding and batting – they are not against the rule and are a part of strategy that can help the team to win.

I told my wife and son that his questions were answered by you – they were both so happy. I’m sorry that it took a while for me to tell you this – I really appreciate your kindness.

I’ll keep rooting for the team hoping that the Marines can possibly be the winner in the end of the season.)
