(April 18th) Today it is a lousy rainy day here in Makuhari, so we called the game early. It’s not raining that hard as I speak to you, but the forecast is really bad.

The players played the game last night in the rain and really weren’t excited about playing another game in the rain, and I can understand that. So with that said, we’ll play the scheduled third game of the Orix series tomorrow with Kobayashi Hiroyuki out on the mound. I’m looking forward to that.

We had three tough games, no doubt about it, but you know. They say that if it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger and we are not dead. I think that we are getting stronger every day and I like what I see. I think that as soon as we warm up, we’ll have all the pieces together and they are coming along.

I’d like to give credit to Julio Zuleta who is playing with a broken finger as he broke a little pinky when getting hit by a pitch. He is continuing to play - he is a real warrior, a great guy to have on the team, and he sets a good example for everyone else.

See you soon and thanks for tuning in!

    Bobby,

I was so excited to find your blog site today…and I can’t believe I didn’t find it before now. I would always go online and Google your name to find out the latest on you and your team but I must not have gone back or paged over enough to get to Bobbysway. I have read all your letters, from the holidays of 2006 forward up to today and will read your letters everyday. I also went back and read some of your early letters at the beginning and plan to continue until I am all caught up.

I really enjoyed your letter about Paul Pupo and his family and it was so nice to read about Paul, Donna, Joe, Ruthie, and their sons as they are the link that gave me my opportunity of a lifetime which was to meet you in person and talk with you on January 25, 2003 at Anthem Country Club in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event was the UNLV Baseball Kick Off Banquet. It is one of those things that happen in life that was meant to be. You left the Mets at the end of the 2002 and had time to do this event. My son, Shane Clatterbuck, was a pitcher for UNLV. Shane had given up a scholarship at Oregon State to come back to Las Vegas (after the events of 9-11-01) as he wanted to be at home and go to UNLV. He had to sit out the 2001-2002 season but got his two year eligibility back. He tried out and made the baseball team for the 2002-2003 school year. He was so thrilled to play for UNLV. When he heard you were going to be the ‘Guest Speaker’ at the UNLV Baseball Kick Off Banquet he knew this was an opportunity for me to go with him and he knew I would be so happy because I idolized you as a MLB Manager of my favorite team, the Mets. He knew I respected you so very much and still do. Also, because I am a single mom I always used you as role model for him. You lived up to his expectations when he met you and spent time with you in the dug out with his team a few days before the banquet. He was really thrilled that you signed a ball for him to give to me, he is a great son. It made me so happy that he was able to meet and spend time with someone I had used as a role model for him. You impressed him with your knowledge and just the kind of person you are. When you idolize someone, you can be disappointed once you meet them but that was not the case. You more than lived up to our expectations. I was brave enough to introduce myself to you and we talked about baseball while enjoying the beautiful view. I told you I lived to see you with the Mets and didn’t know what I would do now that you didn’t manage them anymore. You told me you were going to ESPN, well I was thrilled and I have to admit I watched every Baseball Tonight while you were there…I still watch it but not as faithfully. My son, to this day, says he believes that was one of the happiest days of my life. I was so happy to meet you and to hear you speak, you are a very impressive speaker and people hang on your every word. It also just so happened that we sat at the table with the Pupo family (our sons were friends and Ruthie and I had become friends as baseball moms) and it was really wonderful to find out that you all were and continue to be such good friends. The evening was wonderful and to my delight Paul or Joe made a picture of me and you. Ruthie gave me a copy of it when she and Donna returned from Japan in 2004. She called and told me what a wonderful time she had there. She said they really love you in Japan that you are treated royally there. I saw them and talked to them at the games. I talked to Paul a lot at the games before he left to be with you.

Shane graduated in 2004. He did not decide to go the minor league route through the independent leagues, even though, he was offered the opportunity. He was proud to have won two Division I Championship Rings and felt it was time to get on with his life. He has used what he learned in baseball in his career and continues to win awards. He was Construction Manager of the Year 2006 for Kimball Hill Homes. I know this is just the beginning for him. I am really proud of him and the man he has become. I am thankful for good role models like you. You are a man of true integrity that honors his family and friends. You live life with a passion and really care about things…and that comes through in everything you do.(I remember the cherry blossoms in Washington D.C. from my youth and think about them every spring too). Sharing yourself with so many and making an impact on so many lives…it is great to be able to tell you this. You see, you have even given me the opportunity to do this.

I will read your letters daily and wish you and your team a championship season.

Your loyal Las Vegas Fan – Shirley
